Stretching Credibility

I’ve just been reading about the mother who’s been jailed for inventing the most terrible illness for her son. What a story for a novel — involving duped doctors, massive fraud, meetings with the Prime Minister and threats of litigation to shore the whole edifice up. Of course, if any budding novelist tried to sell this as a synopsis then they would be told it strained credibility.
