{"id":2731,"date":"2015-12-31T22:32:59","date_gmt":"2015-12-31T22:32:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.macnovel.org.uk\/?p=2731"},"modified":"2016-01-05T22:34:26","modified_gmt":"2016-01-05T22:34:26","slug":"so-long-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.macnovel.org.uk\/?p=2731","title":{"rendered":"Light in the Darkness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s been a long, wet, miserably dull December and now Christmas is over, here&#8217;s something bright and colourful to illuminate the darkness.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s an art installation called\u00a0&#8230;&#8212;&#8230; SOS (the name will make sense if you watch the video) which is the third, and final, year of <a title=\"Waddesdon Winter Light\" href=\"http:\/\/www.waddesdon.org.uk\/christmas\/winter-light-at-waddesdon-bruce-munro\" target=\"_blank\">artist Bruce Monro&#8217;s installations at Waddesdon Manor<\/a>. I&#8217;ve been impressed by the first two (and I think probably posted about them on this blog) but I absolutely loved this one (note the video\u00a0contains flashing lights).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ukpGhRPw4SY?rel=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a circuit of 167 tents set in the gardens, all lit in synchronised, changing colors to a soundtrack that was apparently inspired by the artist&#8217;s memories of listening to a transistor radio on camping holidays.<\/p>\n<p>The soundtrack is fantastic &#8212; there&#8217;s three minutes of it in my YouTube clip. It&#8217;s mainly snippets of popular music from the last 40 years (Fleetwood Mac to <em>Loose Fit)<\/em>, although there&#8217;s some classical and random bits of what sounds like Radio 4 (there&#8217;s certainly the shipping the forecast and the <em>Today<\/em> programme&#8217;s infamous racing selections).<\/p>\n<p>I could have crawled into a tent and listened to it all night.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a real serendipitous mix and exactly the sort of thing that would appeal to Kim in my novel &#8212; the bold, primary colours, the repurposing of clips of well-know songs and the esoteric weirdness of the spoken sections.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly the exhibition has finished now but enjoy the video.
