{"id":1314,"date":"2012-03-15T22:48:37","date_gmt":"2012-03-15T22:48:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.macnovel.org.uk\/?p=1314"},"modified":"2012-03-15T22:48:37","modified_gmt":"2012-03-15T22:48:37","slug":"thatch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.macnovel.org.uk\/?p=1314","title":{"rendered":"Thatch"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thisiswiltshire.co.uk\/news\/8835647.Fire_breaks_out_at_Red_Lion__Avebury\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Red Lion Avebury from This Is Wiltshire\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thisiswiltshire.co.uk\/resources\/images\/1561575\/?type=articleLandscape\" alt=\"Red Lion Avebury from This Is Wiltshire\" width=\"400\" height=\"265\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fire At Red Lion, Avebury from This Is Wiltshire<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I&#8217;ve always had a soft spot for the Red Lion in Avebury &#8212; it&#8217;s the most typically English thing imaginable &#8212; a half-timbered, thatched pub situated right in the middle of one of the most significant ancient sites in the world &#8212; the famous stone circle.<\/p>\n<p>In a typically English prosaic touch, the pub isn&#8217;t preserved in an idyllic garden but has a busy A-road passing right by the front door &#8212; and, when I&#8217;ve visited, this had brought a load of bikers stopping off to provide the pub&#8217;s\u00c2\u00a0client\u00c3\u00a8le\u00c2\u00a0&#8212; not ruddy-faced yokels.<\/p>\n<p>In the current draft of the novel, it&#8217;s mentioned at least twice (Kim and Emma are into the stones&#8217; energy) &#8212; and the exterior looks quite like I imagine The Angel itself to look &#8212; particularly the thatching.<\/p>\n<p>As the photo shows above, <a title=\"Fire At the Red Lion, This is Wiltshire\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thisiswiltshire.co.uk\/news\/8835647.Fire_breaks_out_at_Red_Lion__Avebury\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Red Lion became one of the many thatched hostleries to catch on fire <\/a>&#8212; fortunately this was contained in the Red Lion&#8217;s case but I know at least three pubs (at least two that were thatched) that have burned down into a shell in the last ten years within 15 miles of where I live: the Woolpack, Stoke Mandeville &#8212; rebuilt extraordinarily quickly; the Bottle and Glass, Gibraltar (between Aylesbury and Thame); and the Rising Sun, Ickford (a village in the wilds up near J8 of the M40).
